Volodymyr Zelenskyy fires a top Ukrainian military commander for no apparent reason
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday fired a senior military commander helping lead the struggle against Russian forces in the country’s troubled east but gave no rationale for the move.
In a one-line decree, Zelenskyy announced the removal of Eduard Moskalyov as commander of the joint forces of Ukraine, which are involved in hostilities in the Donbas region.
In a daily address on Friday, Zelenskyy included Moskalyov among the military officers he had spoken with. Moskalyov has been in charge since March 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine.
The dismissal was not mentioned on the joint forces’ Facebook or Twitter profiles.
Russian forces are making aggressive efforts to conquer the two eastern regions that comprise the Donbas, and Zelenskyy has described the military situation in the east as challenging and terrible in recent weeks.
Pro-Moscow forces are concentrating their efforts in Bakhmut, launching repeated assaults despite high casualties, according to Ukrainian and Western sources.
The Ukrainian armed forces’ general staff stated on Facebook that Russian troops carried out numerous unsuccessful attacks in the Bakhmut area on Sunday.
