It will be “extremely difficult,” according to Boris Johnson, for him to support Rishi Sunak’s revised Brexit plan for Northern Ireland.

The agreement “was not about the UK gaining back control,” according to the former prime minister.

Since Mr. Sunak disclosed the Windsor agreement on Monday, he hasn’t offered any commentary prior to now.

The agreement with the EU intends to address Northern Ireland’s post-Brexit trade issues.

But Mr. Johnson said it was “a version of the solution that was being offered” to Liz Truss when she served as his foreign secretary last year.

In a speech in Westminster, the former PM said: “This is the EU graciously unbending to do what we want in our country not by our laws but by theirs.

“I’m going to find it very difficult to vote for something like this myself, as I believe we should have done something different.”

The deal would act as a “a drag anchor on divergence” from the EU, he added.

“Brexit is nothing unless we in this country don’t do things differently.”

If the new agreement is unsuccessful, Mr. Johnson demanded that his contentious Northern Ireland Protocol Bill, which the EU claimed would violate international law, be reinstated.

After telling Parliament that his new agreement “puts beyond all doubt that we’ve now taken back control,” Mr. Sunak vetoed the bill.

In the upcoming weeks, Parliamentarians are anticipated to vote on Mr. Sunak’s Windsor framework.

Instead of aggressively voting against it, Mr. Johnson might choose to abstain.

Despite the fact that the majority of the party’s MPs seem to be supporting the new arrangement, he still wields considerable influence on the Conservative backbenches.

Moreover, Labor has stated that they will support it, ensuring that it will pass into law.

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), whose backing is essential to reinstating the power-sharing government in Northern Ireland, has not yet provided a judgement on the agreement.

The Brexiteer European Research (ERG) group of Tory MPs has retained attorneys to thoroughly examine the wording before reaching a conclusion.

The new agreement is about “what is best for the people in Northern Ireland,” not “personalities,” according to Mr. Sunak’s prior statements.

The agreement, according to him, “will make a good difference for everyone” in Northern Ireland.
