Leo Varadkar meets Joe Biden at White House
Leo Varadkar, the Irish prime minister, is being hosted by him at the White House as part of celebrations for St. Patrick’s Day.
Later on Friday, he will also meet with the heads of the five major Stormont parties.
Ireland will be the subject of a visit by President Biden “soon,” he has promised.
He has not yet said if he will travel to Northern Ireland to commemorate the Good Friday Agreement’s 25th anniversary next month.
He disregarded most questions from reporters during a press conference in the Oval Office but when questioned about a visit to Ireland he claimed it would happen “soon”.
He declared that he had reiterated the support of his administration for the Good Friday Agreement.
The president has been invited to Northern Ireland, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on Sunday, to attend events related to the peace agreement.
The US’s “help and understanding,” Mr. Varadkar added, regarding Brexit and the Northern Ireland Protocol in recent years were greatly appreciated.
Also, the two presidents expressed gratitude for one another’s cooperation in the Ukraine conflict.
Usually, in the middle of their terms, US presidents travel to Ireland.
Mr. Biden has made a big deal out of his Irish heritage, and it’s anticipated that he’ll visit his ancestral home of County Mayo in Northern Ireland, Dublin, and the UK.
