India’s southern coast has been pummeled by intense winds and rain due to a powerful cyclonic storm; there have been claims of multiple fatalities.

Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have evacuated thousands of residents who lived in low-lying areas.

Chennai’s residential neighborhoods have been inundated, causing trees to be uprooted and cars to be carried away.

One of the busiest airports in India, Chennai, ceased operations on Monday.

Six individuals had died, according to Chennai police, with electrocution and falling structures among the causes of death. According to the Reuters news agency, a wall in the city of Chengalpattu collapsed due to rain, killing two people.

With winds of up to 110 km/h (68 mph), Cyclone Michaung is predicted to make landfall in Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday at noon local time, between Nellore and Machilipatnam.

A red signal has been issued by meteorological officials for some regions in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. In at least four districts, banks, colleges, and schools will be closed on Tuesday in addition to being closed on Monday.

Factories were shuttered in and around Chennai, a significant center for electronics and manufacturing, including establishments that produce iPhones, according to international media.

According to the news agency, about 7,000 people have been evacuated from the state’s coastal districts, and up to 21,000 more may need to do the same based on the cyclone’s path and intensity.

It is anticipated that the brunt of the storms will pass by Wednesday morning.

Over the past 24 hours, extremely heavy rainfall has been seen in the north of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh; rain and wind advisories have been issued for portions of these two states, along with Telangana and Odisha.

Additionally, the Indian Meteorological Department has issued a warning, advising residents in southern Andhra Pradesh, northern Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry to stay indoors.

Additionally, it stated that significant harm to the local housing stock was anticipated and cautioned fishermen not to venture out to sea in several coastal districts.

Over the course of the next day, more than 20 cm (8 in) of rain is predicted to fall in several parts of Andhra Pradesh.

In the past 24 hours, there have been up to 25 centimeters of rain in certain parts of Chennai.
