Unarmed surveillance flights to be launched by UK to locate Hamas hostages
According to the Ministry of Defence, the UK will conduct unarmed reconnaissance flights over the Middle East in an effort to locate Hamas hostage situations.
The flights will aid in obtaining information about possible hostage locations.
The UK government has not disclosed the number of missing British nationals who may be in the hands of Hamas.
“The safety of British nationals is our utmost priority,” the Ministry of Defense stated.
“In support of the ongoing hostage rescue activity, the Ministry of Defence will conduct surveillance flights over the eastern Mediterranean, including operating in air space over Israel and Gaza.”
It further stated that the aircraft’s only purpose will be to locate hostages; it will be unarmed.
“Only information relating to hostage rescue will be passed to the relevant authorities responsible for hostage rescue.”
According to ministry officials, the aircraft will include Shadow R1s, which are used by the Royal Air Force to gather intelligence.
Israel will be provided with information about possible hostage sites. It is believed that there are at than 130 hostages in Gaza.
Earlier this month, the Pentagon announced that unarmed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) had been sent over Gaza to “support hostage recovery efforts.”
“The US is conducting unarmed UAV flights over Gaza, as well as providing advice and assistance to support our Israeli partner as they work on their hostage recovery efforts,” according to the Pentagon.
Following a week-long ceasefire, fighting returned to Gaza on Friday. On the first day, the IDF claimed to have struck over 400 Hamas targets.
The latest wave of Israeli attacks has resulted in at least 193 deaths, according to the health ministry in Gaza, which is governed by Hamas.
According to the government, over 15,200 individuals have lost their lives in the Gaza conflict, which began on October 7 when Hamas attacked Israel, killing at least 1,200 people.
