Traffic accidents in Karachi have declined by nearly 30 percent over the past six months following the introduction of modern traffic monitoring and management measures, according to DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah.
While speaking at the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), he said that 308 fatal traffic accidents were reported this year, compared to 447 during the same period last year.
He added that serious injury cases also decreased from 806 to 569, and deaths involving heavy vehicles fell from 155 to 75.
The DIG said traffic monitoring is currently being done through 1,300 cameras installed across the city, and another 2,250 cameras will be added in the next phase.
He also said that the Traffic Police has set up a Traffic Flow Unit and a Traffic Drone Unit to improve traffic control.
He repeated that there is a strict zero-tolerance policy on underage driving, and the minimum fine for motorcycle violations is Rs. 2,500.
He further said that encroachments and illegal parking are still major reasons for traffic jams, and authorities have identified 34 key traffic bottlenecks in Karachi for targeted action.
