House approves the ban on assault weapons
After passing the House 217–113 on a partisan vote, a bill outlawing assault weapons; with military-style design is now on its way to the Senate.
Assault rifles have been described as the “weapon of choice” in fatal mass shootings; by New York Democrat Jerry Nadler. He claimed that they have no place on American streets.
Congressman Tim Walberg of Michigan’s 7th District issued the following statement:
“Speaker Pelosi’s contempt for Americans’ Second Amendment rights never ends. Democrats are attempting to curtail the constitutional rights of the American people at every opportunity; and today’s vote is yet another danger to these liberties. This fatally flawed legislation would prohibit some of the most popular weapons; that millions of law-abiding people own without addressing the underlying causes of violence. As my constituents have always relied on me to do; I will continue to oppose any partisan initiatives to weaken the Second Amendment.
The bill’s chances in the divided Senate are slim.
