In a West Bank raid, Israel kills six militants
A significant Israeli operation against a militant organization in the occupied West Bank resulted in the deaths of five Palestinians, including at least three gunmen.
According to Palestinian medical officials, Israeli troops shot and killed a sixth Palestinian after they were stoned in retaliation for the raid.
The recently created Lion’s Den faction was the objective of the operation in the northern city of Nablus.
In an incident earlier this month, the group shot and killed an Israeli soldier.
During the last two weeks, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) placed Nablus under lockdown while conducting a thorough hunt for the Israeli soldier’s killer. Ido Baruch, a staff sergeant, was killed by gunfire in an ambush around 8 kilometers (five miles) from an Israeli settlement.
Following a series of deadly attacks against Israelis earlier this year, there has been an increase in violence between Israel and Palestinians in the West Bank in recent weeks amid a continuing Israeli effort to root out extremists.
The fact that Israeli soldiers and members of the recognized, internationally supported Palestinian security forces exchanged fire during this raid will disturb the diplomatic community, according to BBC’s Tom Bateman in Nablus.
When our correspondent arrived in the city on Tuesday, the road was covered in the remains of the previous night’s fighting; pebbles were scattered across the asphalt, and firefighters were dousing burning tyres with water.
Now that Nablus is on strike. According to him, businesses and eateries are closed down along streets that are typically bustling with marketplaces and schoolchildren leaving for the day. The only sound to be heard is that of gunmen returning from funerals while continuing to fire into the air.
Following nearly daily arrest raids by Israeli forces against terrorists mostly based in the northern West Bank, the Lion’s Den group was created. According to the Israeli military, it is thought to have a few dozen members and has carried out or attempted strikes near Nablus and as far away as Tel Aviv.
Recent appeals from the Palestinian Authority (PA), which oversees Nablus, for the organization to surrender its weapons in exchange for joining the recognized Palestinian security forces, were ignored.
The IDF claimed that security forces had targeted an apartment in the center of Nablus’ Old City, which it claimed was being used as the organization’s headquarters and a bomb-making facility.
Young men flooded onto the streets as Palestinians yelled over loudspeakers for residents to come out and defend the city.
Five Palestinians were murdered in a heated gun battle that broke out between Israeli troops and the Palestinians.
At least three of the deceased have been identified as Lion’s Den members, including the organization’s 31-year-old founder and senior leader Wadi al-Houh. Israeli media claim that all five were associated with it, despite the fact that two of the victims were unarmed civilians.
The other victims in Nablus were identified by the official Palestinian news agency, Wafa, as being Mishaal Zahi Baghdadi, 27, Ali Antar, 26, and Hamdi Sharaf, 35.
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, the violence injured more than 20 Palestinians. Israel has not suffered any reported casualties.
During the operation, Israeli soldiers detonated the flat. According to reports in the area, a building was hit by an anti-tank missile.
Qusai Tamimi, a 19-year-old Palestinian, was also shot dead by Israeli soldiers in the southern village of Nabi Saleh after local youngsters reportedly threw stones at them in opposition to the Nablus operation.
After 17 Israelis and two Ukrainians were slain by Palestinian and Israeli Arab terrorists earlier this year, the IDF began a larger, ongoing operation called Break the Wave, which included the raid.
Since January, the West Bank and East Jerusalem have seen an increase in violence that has resulted in the deaths of over 100 Palestinians, including terrorists, assailants, and civilians, making this year one of the worst for Palestinians since 2015.
