Tomatoes may be able to be cultivated on Mars
Tomatoes can be grown on Mars, according to recent scientific research.
Scientists at the Aldrin Space Institute in Florida were able to grow the crop in a biodome that mimicked the severe conditions on Mars.
The two-year project was funded by Heinz, a sauce business, and it raises hopes that humans would be able to bring their favorite cuisines to other galaxies if we colonies them.
According to Professor Andrew Palmer, “If we are to sustain life on other planets, we need to be able to understand how we can grow and produce food long-term, using the tools we will have available to us.
“Achieving a crop that is of a quality to become Heinz ketchup was the dream result. It has allowed us to see what the possibilities are for long-term food production beyond Earth.”
Heinz has developed prototype ketchup using the tomatoes cultivation during the trial, dubbed the ‘Marz Edition.’
