For the first time in history, the African country of Sudan has entered the race for the most prestigious and highest film award in the world.

The first film to be nominated for an Oscar by Sudan has been selected.

According to the details, Oscar-winning Sudanese filmmaker Amjad Abu’s award-winning feature film ‘You Will Die at 20’ was officially nominated for the category of Sudan’s Best International Feature Film.

A post on the film’s official Instagram account said: “We’re so proud to announce that Sudan has entered the Academy Awards race for the first time with the selection of Amjad Abu Alala’s You Will Die at Twenty as the country’s first Best International Feature Film submission for the 2021 Academy Awards.”

The post further said that this is only the eighth feature film in the history of Sudanese cinema, marking a milestone in the country’s cultural landscape, opening the door to a new wave of local filmmakers to share their stories with audiences at home and abroad.

“We knew when we made this film that it was a big project,” UAE-born director Amjad Abu told International media outlet Arab News in a previous interview.

The feature film ‘You Will Die at 20’ premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2019 and won the Line of the Future Award.

The film was also screened at the El Gouna Film Festival, where it won a Golden Star for Best Narrative Feature.

It is to be noted that after the nominations from the countries, the final nominations are selected for all the categories of the Academy Awards Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Academy Awards and then the list of final nominees is released while the awards are usually held in February every year.

However, in June this year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the ABC Television Network postponed the Oscars for two months due to the Corona epidemic.
