Laine Hardy, the winner of American Idol, has been charged for felony recording his ex-private girlfriend’s talks in her college dorm room in Louisiana.

According to Baton Rouge’s local CBS affiliate WAFB 9News, the 21-year-old country musician handed himself in to the Louisiana State University Police Department on Friday morning, April 29, and was booked into East Baton Rouge Prison shortly after.

Laine was still in prison as of mid-afternoon on Friday, according to the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison’s Inmate List, which is published online.

“Hardy was arrested by LSU Police today and booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison for violation of 15:1303 — Interception and Disclosure of Wire, Electronic, or Oral Communication,” LSU spokesman Ernie Ballard told the news outlet.

A female and her roommate discovered a recording device inside their dorm room at Azalea Hall on the LSU campus on April 6, according to an arrest warrant obtained by WAFB 9News.

The pair called LSU police the next day to report their discovery, with the female informing officers she discovered the gadget, which seemed to be a phone charger, under her futon.

The woman claimed to have had a romantic involvement with Laine in the past.

Authorities eventually discovered evidence of covert recordings taken on 10 different days in February 2022, according to the arrest warrant.

If convicted, Laine, who competed on American Idol’s sixteenth season and went on to win Season 17 in 2019, may face a fine of up to $10,000 and a ten-year prison sentence.

Laine turned himself in to police on Friday morning after a warrant for his arrest had been issued the day before on Thursday, April 28.

The country artist sent a lengthy message to his Facebook fans on Thursday night, telling them of his impending arrest.

“Earlier today, I received a warrant due to allegations made against me and have been fully cooperative with the Louisiana State University Police Department,” Laine wrote.

“I understand that my career has thrust me into the public spotlight, and I embrace that wholeheartedly as my entire world belongs to my music and my fans. However, due to the sensitive nature of this allegation, I humbly ask for privacy at this time.”

He added, “I have the utmost respect for the law and will assist in their investigation as needed moving forward.”

Laine, who now lives in French Settlement, LA, was only 18 years old when he participated on Season 17 of American Idol and defeated runner-up Alejandro Aranda to win the competition.

During the Season 17 finale, American Idol judge Katy Perry remarked that Laine, who never made it through the final round of auditions on Season 16, must have taken some “pop star vitamins.”

Katy predicted that if Laine continued to apply himself as he had during the competition, he would be “one of the biggest stars on the planet” in the next five years.

Laine’s “the best attitude ever” was praised by fellow judge Lionel Richie, and Luke was charmed by the singer’s distinct and unmistakable tone.

Laine confirmed earlier this week that he would be returning to American Idol and performing alongside fellow Season 17 contestant Laci Kaye Booth on Monday, May 2 at Season 20’s results show.

However, given his arrest, it’s unclear whether the Idol performance will still happen.

Laine has been featured in Louisiana tourism advertisements and on the cover of the Louisiana Inspiration Guide’s 2022 cover, according to WAFB 9News.

“Laine Hardy has been an outstanding ambassador for Louisiana and partnering with him has been a truly wonderful experience,” Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser reportedly said when releasing the guide earlier this year.

“His love of Louisiana is evident in his music and in the passion he shows when speaking about our great state.
