George R.R. Martin, the author of the novel that became the hit fantasy series Game of Thrones, talks about the fan backlash the show received at the end of its run.

The political intrigue and magical horrors that plague the realms of Westeros and Essos were chronicled in HBO’s hugely successful adaptation of Martin’s novels, which became one of the most-watched TV shows of all time.

Despite its global popularity, Game of Thrones season 8 was met with considerable criticism from critics and fans when it premiered in 2019. The series finale has become infamous for having one of the most underwhelming endings in television history, with many critics praising the bad writing, dreadful lighting, and unsatisfactory resolutions to most of the main character plot lines.

Now, the author has spoken out about the controversy over the Game of Thrones ending. Martin expresses surprise at “how individuals may come to despise so much something that they once liked” in an interview with The Independent. He also argues that some of the show’s fan criticism has been “toxic.”

He stated, according to Screenrant, “I don’t understand it, you know. OK, you love a show, you love a character. What’s the worst… it’s either going to be a good show or a bad show or a mediocre show. Some episodes are good, some are bad. Why are people getting so crazy about it, you know? […] I don’t understand how people can come to hate so much something that they once loved. If you don’t like a show, don’t watch it! How has everything become so toxic?”

Meanwhile, with House of the Dragon coming on HBO Max on August 21, we won’t have to wait long to see how the Game of Thrones finale affects audience views for the new show.
