Following speculations that the monarch will attend her Platinum Jubilee ceremonies, the British government has announced new plans to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign.

The 96-year-old monarch made a rare public appearance at the Royal Windsor Horse Show this week, delighting supporters. Her presence has boosted courtiers’ hopes that she would be able to attend at least some of the major events over her jubilee weekend, such as Trooping the Colour, the Derby at Epsom Downs, and a national thanksgiving ceremony at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Ministers confirmed yesterday that over 70,000 Big Jubilee Lunches will be held across the four UK nations over the weekend, with an estimated 10 million people anticipated to gather with their neighbours to commemorate Her Majesty’s record-breaking reign.

Thousands of people will gather outdoors in London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff to watch the major events next month on large screens.

In addition, the BBC is granting local communities an unique one-off TV Licence exemption to allow them to broadcast the events on a large screen.

The Queen, who will be feted at tens of thousands of street parties and other events across the country during the double bank holiday weekend from June 2 to 5, may preside over a family reunion and attempt to mend broken relationships when the Sussexes return to Britain for the central Jubilee weekend in three weeks.
