Simu Liu’s life is now an open book after the publication of his memoir, We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Story. In an interview with People, the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings actor discusses his attempts to repair his relationship with his parents, which he describes as “very awful.”

According to PEOPLE, the cultural divides between his traditional Chinese-Canadian parents and his personal experience as an immigrant kid became obvious throughout his adolescence, driving him to join a boy band, date females, and stay out late.

He was exposed to screaming matches and harsh punishment as his grades began to suffer, “I remember thinking, ‘I’ve got the worst parents in the world.’ I felt so alone,” he adds. “Nobody could understand what I was enduring at home.”

His parents, on the other hand, didn’t become unduly proud of him until he graduated from an Ivey Business School and landed an accounting job, which he lost months later when he was fired and decided to pursue a career as an actor. As he says, landing a career-defining role in the CBC sitcom Kim’s Convenience was a watershed event in his career.

Simu explains as per PEOPLE, “We weren’t fighting, but we hadn’t collectively chosen to go back into our trauma and how we were all individually affected by it,” he writes, recounting how he decided to lay it all out in an emotional letter to his mother. After she’d read what he’d written, she called him, resulting in “the first time we really talked about those issues,” added, “We both acknowledged that we were flawed human beings trying to do our best.”
