Amber Heard-Johnny Depp trial: Jury reaches verdict

The jury in the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard defamation trial is debating in Fairfax, Virginia, before pronouncing their judgement.

The multi-million dollar trial has finally concluded after six weeks of depositions and intimate details were revealed.

While the trial has received enormous public attention, the jury will deliberate and decide whether Heard did, on the balance of probabilities, slander former spouse Depp in the Post piece at the heart of the dispute.

Looking at the probable outcomes of the defamation trial, if the jury determines in Depp’s favour, Heard will be compelled to pay him the $50 million he is asking in compensation for lost profits.

Furthermore, if the jury finds in favour of the Aquaman actress, Depp will receive nothing and may be required to pay his ex-wife the $100 million she requested in her countersuit.

Again, the jury might reach the conclusion that the sum is excessive or insufficient and propose a modification.

Meanwhile, because this is a civil lawsuit rather than a criminal one, a judgement in favour of Depp would not result in Heard being imprisoned for perjury.

Because this is a civil matter, an out-of-court settlement between the two parties, as agreed upon when they divorced, is another possibility.

However, given the contentious tone of Depp and Heard’s current relationship, it seems improbable at this late date.

Depp, 58, has sued Heard, 35, for $50 million for an opinion post she penned for The Washington Post in December 2018 about domestic violence and feeling “the full weight of our culture’s fury for women who speak up.”

Although she did not identify her ex-husband in the article, Depp’s legal team claims that readers were likely to infer he was the perpetrator of the violence and that the piece caused their client to lose lucrative film jobs as a result of its publication.
