Fans of the fantasy drama series House of the Dragon were left to analyze the situation in Westeros after the season finale aired a couple of weeks ago to much hoopla.

Fans would have plenty of time to anticipate Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen’s (Emma D’Arcy) reaction to the passing of her son, Prince Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault), in the sky above Storm’s End because the series isn’t set to return until at least 2024. There will probably be others who choose to watch the series again in the months that come. You might have missed an actor change towards the climax.

The twin brothers of the Kingsguard, Ser Arryk Cargyll and Ser Erryk Cargyll, played by Luke and Elliott Tittensor, were first revealed to us as the season came to a close. The two were in some way in charge of aiding in the capture of Prince Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) and placing him on the Iron Throne during the penultimate episode.

When fresh allegiances are declared, the couple would ultimately become divided; Elliott’s Erryk would support Rhaenyra and the Blacks, while Luke’s Arryk would support Aegon and the Greens. Greg Yaitanes, the final episode’s director, said during an interview on the West of Westeros podcast that Elliott’s COVID infection caused a production hiccup during filming.

It meant that production had to find a successor, and his twin brother was, of course, the solution. Yaitanes explains in the podcast, “There’s that scene, that big scene where Corlys (Steve Toussaint) comes down and they’re laying the marks on the table and the messenger walks in. He continues, “It was a shot spanning two days and then one got COVID. Since [Elliott] had COVID, his sibling was substituted.

That would have killed us if Luke hadn’t been able to step in for his brother, the filmmaker notes, so it would have been a huge relief to have such a competent alternative to address an unanticipated difficulty. It is also a testament to Luke that he could take on a little different job and do it flawlessly, as Yaitanes continues, “We were just about to perform all Emma’s coverage and he is standing right next to [them].”

The first season of House of the Dragon is officially over, and when the series resumes, we can expect to see the chess pieces in motion as the Dance of the Dragons gets underway. However, the war for the Iron Throne will split apart Viserys Targaryen’s (Paddy Considine) family and set the two twins against one another. When the two came face to face on the battlefield, it was undoubtedly a touching and possibly heartbreaking event.

On HBO Max, House of the Dragon may be watched in its entirety.
