Austin Butler hosted Saturday Night Live’s Christmas special programme, which featured Lizzo as the musical guest and offered viewers a lovely start to the holiday season.

Cecily Strong was the longest-serving female cast member of Saturday Night Live, therefore the episode was especially poignant because it was her final appearance on the show.

In light of this, the programme began with a humorous cold-open before transitioning into one of the most moving monologues we’ve recently seen.

Which is still a characteristic of the programme, as guests frequently express how thrilled they are to be a part of the juggernaut of sketch comedy.

Butler’s most moving tribute came when he described how his mother raised him and his sister at home and was always at his side.

He spoke candidly about many aspects of his life. Making fun of his upbringing as a young actor and how his voice has changed as a result of playing Elvis in the Baz Luhrmann film Elvis.

When Butler was younger, he appeared on several television programmes and revealed that, when he wasn’t in front of the camera, he was an exceedingly shy child. Butler also revealed how, in another instance of self-deprecation, he overcame his shyness to make it to the Saturday Night Live stage.

Then Butler touched hearts when he gave a touching and sentimental homage to his late mother. The actor has been outspoken about how Lori Anne Butler’s passing gave him a connection to Elvis and enabled him to bring the part to life. Lori Anne Butler passed away in 2014.

The most heartwarming part of the speech was when he talked about being shy and explained how his mother helped him overcome it so that he could eventually go on Saturday Night Live.

“Some of my favorite memories growing up are she and I watching SNL together,” he said. “We’d watch every week and even though I had this crippling shyness, when I was with her I’d do anything to make my mom laugh.”

At the end of the monologue, he explains that if he does a strange voice or face, it will be in honor of his mother since she would be so thrilled to see her shy kid on the Saturday Night Live stage. He continues by discussing how he would perform faces and voices for her.
