The section from Avatar: The Way of Water provided the most food for thought during the Disney panel at the Brazilian Comic-Con Experience on Thursday.

To represent the James Cameron film on stage, Zoe Saldaa (who plays Neytiri) and film producer Jon Landau teased what we can expect from the sequel, including revealing that the film is bigger in every way than the original.

They then presented evidence to back up their claims: Everyone in attendance for the panel saw 18 minutes of never-before-seen footage.

As you’re probably aware, these types of clips are typically con-exclusive, but we can now tell you what the Avatar team’s clips were aiming to showcase.

The 18 minutes were not chronological, but rather divided into different instalments to provide a larger picture of what will be released in theatres in two weeks.

The trailer made it clear that there will be plenty of room in the story for Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri’s children, who will be teenagers by the time we meet them.

The clips also suggest that the kids will be self-sufficient enough to have their own storylines, which appear to be different Na’vi clans disagreeing with the fact that Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton), and Tuk (Trinity Jo-Lo Bliss) are children of a “hybrid.”

In case you missed it, Jake Sully’s mind was transferred to his avatar by the end of the first film, leaving his human body behind.

The clips also revealed that Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) was pregnant at the time of her death, and that by preserving her body, the Na’vi were able to allow her to have a daughter – who appears to be heavily featured in the story.

We also get an extended cut of one of the trailer’s most memorable scenes: Jake’s child touching the fin of a massive whale-like creature.

We learn in the extended cut that the young Na’vi saved the animal from a cruel attack and began to bond with it. We even get a shot from the whale’s perspective, and they have a lovely moment together.

We also got a look at the diverse aquatic life that will be presented in Avatar: The Way of Water, which is all about the sea life in Pandora.

As the cast has already stated, they spent a significant amount of time filming in water tanks, and it shows. The underwater sequences are likely to be the highlight of the upcoming film, as evidenced by the clips.

Last but not least, the clips hinted at another war on Pandora, with the Na’vi having to defend themselves with their weapons and creatures against heavy machinery, implying another human invasion. The war appears to be destabilising Jake, who must be reminded by Neytiri that he is the Toruk Makto.

The humans’ goal in the first film was to extract the precious metal “unobtanium” from Pandora, and that could very well be the motivation again, given that humans failed to acquire it the first time.

Avatar: The Way of Water is the second instalment in a planned five-part film series, with new instalments expected every two years.

However, because the franchise is extremely expensive to create, if the sequels fail to live up to the success of the original—which is only the highest-grossing film ever made—we may be looking at a story that will struggle to be told all the way to the end.

On December 16, Avatar: The Way of Water will be released in theatres. The most recent trailer is available below:
