Ellen Pompeo is enthusiastic about the future after leaving Grey’s Anatomy.

The actress told Drew Barrymore Tuesday about her diminished position after 19 seasons.

“I’m extremely delighted, but the show has been great to me,” Pompeo stated on The Drew Barrymore Show. “Listen, I need to shake things up. My brain is confused at 53. I need to try something new or I’ll become someone who can’t finish the NYT crossword daily.”

“I mean, 10 years is longer than people keep their kids in their home — they keep their kids in their house until they’re 18 and then send them to college, so this is like me going to college,” she said.

Pompeo is looking forward to spending time with her children, son Eli Christopher, 5, and daughters Sienna May, 8, and Stella Luna, 13; and filming Orphan.

“I’m busy,” she said. “I have three kids, so it’s crucial for me to be with them and present. I’ll make a limited series for Hulu in the spring that’s a fantastic factual tale.”

This season, Pompeo left Grey’s Anatomy to work on Orphan, about a couple whose adopted daughter is a grown woman.

Last week at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, Pompeo suggested that viewers would still see Meredith Grey this season.

“This year is the conclusion,” she told E! “We’ve shown 6 or 7 episodes. Maybe after the winter holiday, I’m in one more, then the finale.”

She praised supporters for making “it all possible,” adding “Power to the people!”

Chandra Wilson said Pompeo’s character would “ebb and flow” during season 19 of the ABC drama.

Meredith is supposed to take care of the baby in Boston, but things seldom go as planned on Grey’s Anatomy. “Meredith is still in every episode, giving voiceovers, and she gets to ebb and flow all season.”

She said, “Meredith’s always here.”

Pompeo sent a touching parting message on Instagram after Grey’s Anatomy’s fall finale, her last episode of the season.

Pompeo, 53, tweeted, “I am forever thankful and humbled by the love and support you’ve given me, Meredith GREY, and the show for 19 seasons!” “It wouldn’t have been possible without the finest supporters in the world. You are RIDERS and have made the trip entertaining and iconic!!”

She said, “I love and appreciate you.”

Meredith’s journey (so far) concluded with her character leaving Seattle for Boston to explore Alzheimer’s illness. There have been much more spectacular and heartbreaking departures, and Meredith’s new employment opens the door to guest appearances.

In her statement, Pompeo confirmed it. “This isn’t your first ride. Show must go on, and I’ll be back ” With love and thanks XoE ”
