Netflix made a formal announcement in October that a fourth season of The Witcher was in the works, but it wouldn’t feature the familiar Geralt, prior to the release of Season 3 next year.

Liam Hemsworth would be taking over Henry Cavill’s sword and medallion for the show going forward, which was announced shortly after Henry Cavill’s departure from the show and around the same time he announced his return to the role of Superman, which somewhat backfired.

Since Cavill was viewed as the ideal choice for the role given his obsessive love of video games and general nerd fandom to the series, this news caused quite a stir, with distraught fans pleading for the show to end without him.

The success of the show, which turned out to be a huge hit for Netflix, was greatly influenced by his A-list status and enthusiasm for the part.

Head of U.S. and Canada Scripted Series Peter Friedlander has now spoken to Variety about the actor’s departure from the show. While his response doesn’t offer much in the way of new information about Cavill specifically, it does provide a more limited explanation for why the show is continuing without its star rather than ending altogether.

Friedlander assured viewers that Geralt of Rivia will have been well-served by both actors who have assumed the role in an interview. He also mentioned comparable casting changes, saying:

“Henry is an extraordinary Geralt and I think Liam will continue and also be an extraordinary Geralt. There has been a legacy of amazing, iconic characters where the actors have changed and we’re hugely optimistic about this. We will continue to honor the IP, the fans, the storytelling, all the way through.”

The Witcher’s first season garnered 541 million hours of viewing time from viewers, and season two surpassed Netflix’s most popular show, Stranger Things, in terms of viewership.

Currently available on Netflix is The Witcher: Blood Origin, a spin-off of the series starring Michelle Yeoh.

Before handing off the role to Hemsworth in The Witcher Season 3, fans will still be able to see Cavill. In the summer of 2023, The Witcher Season 3 is scheduled to debut.
