Stephen Greif, who was best known to Americans for his role on “The Crown,” died on Monday. He was 78 years old.
During Season 4 of the hit Netflix show about the British royal family, the character actor played Speaker of the House Sir Bernard Weatherill.
The English actor, who was born in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, has two sons who will carry on his work.
Greif had a long career on stage and in movies. He started in the late 1960s with the famous Royal Shakespeare Company in Britain. He was nominated for many awards, including an Olivier Award in 1979 for playing Biff in “Death of a Salesman” at the National Theatre.
Greif is best known to British TV viewers for his roles as space commander Travis in the sci-fi show “Blake’s 7” and as pub owner Harry Fenning in the sitcom “Citizen Smith.” He has also appeared on British TV shows like “Coronation Street,” “EastEnders,” and “Doctor Who.”

Greif’s death has caused friends and coworkers to express their condolences and sadness.
“Very sad to hear that Stephen Greif has left us. A great performer with a voice as smooth and dangerous as lava. He was the best when it came to playing bad guys. His sharp sense of humour and clear intelligence made him a pleasure to direct.
