Jane Fonda says Katharine Hepburn ‘intimidated’ her on set

Compared to Katharine Hepburn, Jane Fonda deliberately works in a different manner when interacting with others.

The 85-year-old two-time Oscar winner and her 80 Three of Lily Tomlin’s For Brady co-stars—Rita Moreno and Sally Field—appear on the cover of AARP The Magazine’s February/March 2023 issue.

During an interview, Fonda remarked that she learned how to treat others by acting in the exact opposite of how Hepburn treated her during the 1981 filming of On Golden Pond.

When asked if she’d ever been starstruck or “nervous” around another celebrity, Fonda said, “I was intimidated by Katharine Hepburn, that’s for sure. My God. When we made On Golden Pond, she made sure that she was always top dog — and that I knew it. I think my costars will tell you that I really try to do the opposite and make people feel comfortable.”

Age 96, Hepburn passed away in 2003. Over the course of her Hollywood career, she received a total of 12 Oscar nominations, winning four times, including for Best Actress in On Golden Pond.

Fonda received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress, while Henry Fonda, who played her real-life father in the film, took home the Best Actor prize.
