  • Dimple Kapadia was never defined by the usual limitations of a Hindi film heroine.
  • Her latest role in Pathaan makes her stand out among a cast.
  • That includes Shah Rukh, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham.

Dimple Kapadia plays Shah Rukh Khan’s boss in the current movie Pathaan, but she also excels in many other ways. Dimple is the senior officer who Shah Rukh portrays as a former RAW agent who is a member of a special unit (funnily named JOCR). Pathaan’s guru may have also been Nandini (Dimple). Dimple’s performance in Pathaan, directed by Siddharth Anand, is not her greatest. Nevertheless, it is one of her best recent performances in a Hindi film.

In the current film Pathaan, Dimple Kapadia plays Shah Rukh Khan’s boss, but she also shines in many other areas. Shah Rukh portrays the senior officer Dimple as a former RAW agent who is a part of a special squad (funnily named JOCR). Nandini might have also been Pathaan’s teacher (Dimple). Dimple didn’t provide her best performance in Siddharth Anand’s Pathaan. Nevertheless, it ranks among her best recent Hindi film performances.

Dimple is accustomed to nailing performances, and a well-carved character just highlights the beauty of her efforts. Dimple’s acting throughout the movie is amazing, especially when compared to an artist like Ashutosh Rana.

Pathaan makes effective use of Dimple’s swag, which was possibly redefined with her Hollywood debut (Christopher Nolan’s Tenet). She was also shown as an older, self-assured woman in her Hindi films after Tenet (A Thursday, and Brahmastra Part One Shiva), but not nearly as admirably as Pathaan does.

Pathaan, billed as a spy thriller set in the “spy universe” of Yash Raj Films, tells the tale of the titular character (played by Shah Rukh Khan as Pathaan) and his efforts to protect India and its people as John Abraham (as Jim) and his friends make every effort to attack different parts of the nation.

The Pathaan narrative is not particularly original or unexpected. There are frequently turns that defy rational analysis. Despite this, the movie features all the trademark “entertainer, masala” ingredients: humour, romance, suspense, and whistle-worthy moments (not just Salman Khan’s cameo).

Dimple Kapadia’s introduction into Hindi films and her first few parts were primarily about her beauty and sex appeal when she had a cinematic debut as sensational as Raj Kapoor’s Bobby in 1973 at the age of 16. She was one of the most self-assured people of her time, making the most of her sensuality. Films like Jaanbaaz and Saagar were well-liked by viewers who adored Dimple’s sensual persona.

She has largely carved out her own path and given strength to on-screen women, especially in commercial and masala films, with parts like Megha Dixit aka Kalamwali Bai (Krantiveer, 1994) and Kiran Dutt (Zakhmi Aurat, 1988). The decisions she took in unorthodox films like Rudaali and Antareen helped define her time in the 1990s.

She didn’t start picking fewer roles until the late 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s, and these roles completely changed how older women were portrayed on screen. Dimple picked out a select few parts, ranging from Homi Adajania’s Finding Fanny and Being Cyrus to Somnath Sen’s Leela, that allowed women to defy social expectations and lead the lives they desired. It’s encouraging to observe her making wise decisions even in her second stint in Bollywood.
