The lovely anecdote is told in Prince Harry’s long-awaited book, Spare, which will be released on Tuesday.

During Meghan and the Queen’s first joint engagement in June 2018, just weeks after the Sussexes’ royal wedding in Windsor, Prince Harry writes that his wife returned “glowing” from a visit to Cheshire, about 200 miles from London, where she and the monarch met with community leaders and watched a performance by local schoolchildren.

“The Queen and I got along great!” In Spar, Harry describes his wife as saying. “We chatted about how badly I wanted to be a mother, and she informed me that a good bumpy vehicle trip was the greatest way to induce labour! I assured her I’d think about it when the time came.”

In May 2019, Meghan and Harry’s goal of becoming parents came realized when their son Archie Harrison was born. The Sussexes moved to North America the following year, and their daughter Lilibet Diana was born in June 2021 in California. Both of the children had the opportunity to meet the king, who died in September at the age of 96.

Meghan wore the pearl and diamond drop earrings her grandmother-in-law gave her in honour of their first solo expedition in Cheshire while paying her respects to see the Queen laying in state.

“My grandmother and I were really close, and we had a great relationship,” he explains. “I miss her, as well as her quick wit and irreverent sense of humour.”
