Will Smith has been cast in his first role as the Genie in the Aladdin sequel. Disney is reportedly supporting the Emancipation actor after he smacked Chris Rock on stage during the 2022 Academy Awards. The actor has reportedly “done a lot of work on himself.” By the end of this year, Smith expects to begin shooting the picture, which is partly based on the One Thousand and One Nights collection of Middle Eastern folktales.

This would be one of the first films Will has shot following the Oscars smack, which is unexpected given that it is for a children’s movie, a source informed The Sun. “He has done a lot of work on himself and the consensus is that it will all be very much in the past by the time the movie is released.

“The first film was a huge success so it would be silly not to make another, and it would be a real shame to have to re-cast Will over what happened,” the source added. “So Disney is keen to stand by him and bring him back into the fold,” the insider shared.

The return of Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Jasmine, who played the movie’s stars, is still up in the air. When asked about the status of the movie in an interview, Massoud responded, “There was a change with the authors, and they are working on a new draught.” Aladdin 2 would be wonderful, in my opinion. It ought to occur, he continued. It will not be based on the animated version, I promise. This will be a brand-new, original story.
