As per reports, Tom Cruise’s control or the lack of it, was the reason behind Universal’s ‘Dark Monstrous Universe’ failing.

The 2017 film, which had a budget of roughly $125-195 million, grossed over $410 million at the box office. Unfortunately, it failed to impress spectators and critics, and director Alex Kurtzman regards it as  “probably the biggest failure of [his] life”  In fact, it was even nominated for worst film, worst director, worst actor, worst supporting actor, worst supporting actress, worst script and much more at the 2018 Golden Raspberry Awards — it won for worst actor.

Tom Cruise is a household figure because to his action-packed film series such as Mission: Impossible and Top Gun, as well as his love life. With nearly four decades in the film industry (his debut picture, Endless Love, was released in 1981), the actor now has a voice in how a film will be perceived upon its release.

Cruise has been in a number of big-budget films and played roles from a variety of genres. In reality, he dabbled with the Dark Universe – Universal’s effort to build a cinematic world of interrelated monster flicks with The Mummy in 2017 – but it was an expensive disaster. This universe – the studio’s aspirations for something like to Marvel’s Avengers – was supposed to include films based on other fictitious characters such as Frankenstein, Dracula, and the Wolf Man, but nothing came to fruition.

Returning to Tom Cruise’s The Mummy, the 2017 picture was created on a budget of roughly $125-195 million and grossed approximately $410 million at the box office. Unfortunately, it failed to satisfy spectators and critics, and director Alex Kurtzman describes it as “perhaps the worst disaster of [his] life.” In actuality, it was nominated for worst film, worst director, worst actor, worst supporting actor, worst supporting actress, worst script, and many more categories at the 2018 Golden Raspberry Awards, where it won for worst actor.

Some media sources suggested that Tom Cruise was intimately involved in producing The Mummy and had major creative input over the final movie, as reported by fandomwire. Yet, not everyone feels that Cruise’s presence was an issue, including director Alex Kurtzman. The filmmaker lauded Cruise in an interview with The Playlist’s Bingeworthy programme.

Talking about Cruise and his involvement in the making of The Mummy, director Alex Kurtzman said, “This is very much a film of two halves: before Tom and after Tom. I have heard the stories about how he drives everything and pushes and pushes, but it was amazing to work with him. The guy is a great filmmaker and knows his craft. He will walk onto a set and tell the director what to do, say ‘that’s not the right lens,’ ask about the sets, and as long as you don’t fluff what you’re saying to him … he’s easy to work for.”

The Mummy was directed by Alex Kurtzman and written by Jon Spaihts and Christopher McQuarrie. It was released in 2017. It stars Tom Cruise as Nick Morton, a soldier who unearths the tomb of an ancient Egyptian princess, Sofia Boutella. The film was designed to create the Dark Universe and determine the tone and look for future Universal films. Instead, it was panned for being a dull and uninspired action film that fell short of its promise of being a horror-themed monster thriller.
