Bhediya (Hindi) started slowly at the box office, but evening and night shows were better. Opening day expectations are between 6.70 and 7.50 crore. The Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon film debuted to modest attendance in morning shows but picked up after 5 pm, grossing around Rs 7 crore. The start is below Varun’s last release, Jug Jugg Jeeyo, therefore the weekend is key.
The Amar Kaushik-directed picture made over 3.50 crore in PVR, Inox, and Cinepolis, contributing 50% to the overall biz. The picture was marketed as a kid-friendly creature comedy, which increased ticket sales. Outside of cities, it did better than Jug Jugg Jeeyo
Bhediya must now increase 50% on Saturday and 30-40% on Sunday. The picture must also stay above Rs 5 crore on Monday and Tuesday to earn a respectable total. The picture has a clear window until Avatar’s December 16 release, but Monday will determine if it can use it.
Bhediya would have benefited from a double-digit start, but these numbers put it on trial for the week. The genre, setup, and appeal were wider than Jug Jugg Jeeyo, but this start is underwhelming in industry and cinema circles, as the teaser had sparked genuine interest.
Bhediya has also been launched in Tamil and Telugu; we’re awaiting dubbed estimates, but all India may be under 8 crore.
