The legendary actor recounted a remarkable experience about how he started his start in the business with V Shantaram’s Sehra when he visited the Indian Idol 13 sets for a special episode featuring him this Sunday (1963). Jeetendra spoke with the competitors and the judges Vishal Dadlani, Neha Kakkar, and Himesh Reshammiya about his experience.

The actor, who turned 80 in April, had his start in movies as a result of his father’s connections. Amarnath Kapoor offered fake jewellery to movie producers. Delivering the jewellery to the studios was one way Jeetendra supported his father.

The young man had been approached by Shantaram to work as a junior artist on Sehra during the film’s out-of-Bombay shoot. However, the young man arrived 30 minutes after the scheduled start time, and the director yelled at him and demanded that he be sent home because of his tardiness.

Jeetendra had a different response when he called his father to express his sorrow. He told the judges, “What my father said changed the course of my life. He said, ‘Aaja meri godh mein baith ja (Come and sit in my lap).” Instead of empathizing with his son, his father chose to support the well-known director.

After being corrected by the incident, the young Jeetendra turned up outside Shantaram’s room the following day an hour before call time in full costume and makeup, without assistance from the rest of the crew. After being placated, Shantaram invited him to follow. “Uske baad maine chumchagiri mein koi kasar nahi chodi (After that, I never hesitated to be a sycophant),” he jokingly revealed.

On a more serious note, the actor shared, “The moral of the story and I want to tell every youngster. Maa, baap ki gaali bhi aap ke liye ashirwaad hai (Your parents’ anger is also a blessing).” The judges concurred with Jeetendra’s assertion that you cannot accomplish anything without your parents’ approval. In Shantaram’s Geet Gaaya Pattharonne (1964), Jeetendra co-starred with Rajshree, the director’s daughter.
