Sarika recalls senior actors saying ‘aise heroine thodi na hoti hai’
Veteran actor Sarika remembered an instance from when Griha Pravesh “older actors” approached her during the filming of her movie and inquired about not wearing makeup. A person who hasn’t “backcombed her hair or applied cosmetics” can’t be a “heroine,” according to Sarika in a recent interview.
A drama film with a 1979 release date, Griha Pravesh was directed by Basu Bhattacharya. Sanjeev Kumar, Sharmila Tagore, and Sarika all appear in the movie. Sanjeev Kumar played Amar in the movie, while Sharmila played Mansi and Sarika played Sapna.
Speaking in an interview, Sarika said, “When I did film Griha Pravesh, I didn’t like using makeup and some of the senior actors came to me and said ‘yeh kya hai na back combing kiya hai na makeup lagaya hai yeh aise heroine thodi na hoti hai (what is this, you have neither done backcombing nor applied makeup, this isn’t how heroines are).’ So that’s the idea of growing and evolving of cinema.”
Sarika also discussed the development of acting and her daughters Shruti and Akshara Haasan. She said, “Both my girls (Shruti and Akshara Haasan) they are actors and independent in their own way. They are hardworking women trying to make a mark in their life. Every parent and children have a conversation, in fact, they tell me what to do and I too tell them that but that doesn’t really amount to advice. The generation is very very different whether it is my daughter or actors of their generation who are working now, the style of work is different.”
The last time we saw Sarika was in the Sooraj Barjatya film Uunchai. Four old pals, played by Amitabh Bachchan, Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, and Danny Denzongpa, are the subject of the movie. Neena Gupta and Parineeti Chopra are also included. Rajshri Productions, in collaboration with Mahaveer Jain Films and Boundless Media, produces Uunchai.
Midway through the 1960s, Sarika started her acting career as a child actor in movies like Majhli Didi and Hamraaz. She then went on to star in Geet Gaata Chal, Madhu Malti, Jaan-E-Bahaar, and Jaani Dushman. She started acting again in the middle of the 2000s with roles in movies like Parzania and Bheja Fry, for which she also received a National Award.
