Sumeet Vyas talks about being busy most of 2022
Sumeet Vyas had quite an eventful 2022, as he was filming for not one, but four films in a row. Season 3 of his popular series, Tripling, was also released. In retrospect, the actor believes that more than accomplishments and highs, “this year has been more about learning and reinventing myself”.
To illustrate, he used the film Afwaah, which he co-directed with filmmaker Sudir Mishra. “I can’t talk much about it, as it’s in the process of making, but for me, it was one of the finest experiences in terms of learning. Over the years, we as actors tend to get into a pattern of how we approach a scene or a project. But, Sudhir sir was able to break all those patterns and come up with things that I could not think of. Plus, it was a hit to my ego that how I could not think that way. This whole experience was humbling for me in a way,” shares Vyas.
Vyas says he deliberately chose identities and projects that were diametrically opposed to who he is in real life this year. “I chose all these shows because I wanted to step away from how I am perceived – the warm and funny guy. I chose them because these characters were a giant leap from who I am as a person. That’s the whole fun of acting – you get to be someone else,” he shares
While 2022 has had a successful professional career, the actor says that his personal life has suffered as a result of his rigorous schedule. And his main worry was not spending enough time with his two-and-a-half-year-old son, Ved.
“Half of my year went in talking to him on video calls because I was shooting. There came a point when I got worried thinking that Ved may get used to me not being around,” says the actor, adding, “But I guess that is the price that I have to pay for the kind of work that I do. I am hoping that at some point he will understand where his father comes from and what he does and accept it with open arms.”
Aside from performing, The Permanent Roommate actor has received praise from both audiences and reviewers for his writing, something he is extremely enthusiastic about.
“Writing isn’t my primary job, that’s passion driven. I do it because I enjoy it. And it has been very enlightening. Writing started with an experiment and my first full-fleged script was that of Love Per Square Foot. But over the years, the good response I got, made me feel confident about it and uplifted my spirit to write more,” shares Vyas who later collaborated with TVF and co-wrote the script of Tripling.
In the future, the actor-writer hopes to focus on writing stories for Generation Z. That’s because he believes that in our industry, the older generation writes about them, resulting in less persuasive and unclear narratives.
“People telling stories about younger generation them are older people and they tend to dilute their problems a little. It’s almost like they (younger generation) are the less intelligent lot. But I have a very different opinion of them and I consider them extremely smart. It’s an exciting age group to write something for and I would like to write something that has more depth and their problems, feelings,” he concludes.
