Taapsee Pannu recalls her time at the Miss India beauty pageant

Taapsee Pannu spent a few years trying her hand at modeling before she became an actor. She also tried her luck at the Miss India pageant while still a student, where she placed in the top 28. The actor remembered that there was a lot of partiality at the competition and that during the trial phase, she was made to feel humiliated by a designer who said she shouldn’t have been there.

She was just one of three Delhi-born girls selected, and the actor recalled that she had to compete against established models. She was a novice in comparison to them as she had only participated in photo shoots and had never before appeared in television commercials or walked the ramp.

Taapsee discussed her experience competing in the beauty contest in a conversation with The Lallantop. “I realised during the ‘grooming period’ that this wasn’t something I could do. They’d make us walk, they taught us how to smile. [Designer] Hemant Trivedi used to be the expert teacher at the time, and he humiliated me. He said, ‘If it was in my hand, you would have never been in the top 28.’”

She was conscious of her “There was a lot of favouritism happening there. They were making people sign contracts that strictly stipulated that contestants would have to give 30 percent of all their earnings for three years to the pageant. When it was over, we went for an afterparty, the national director was there, and he wished me good luck for the future very courteously. I don’t know what took over me, but I told him, ‘Sir, take it from me in writing, you’re not getting the crown back’.” I commanded.

Taapsee earned the titles of Miss Fresh Face and Miss Lovely Skin while competing in the pageant. The Telugu movie Jhummandi Naadam, which was released in 2010, marked her acting debut. She made her Hindi film debut in 2013 with Chashme Baddoor, David Dhawan’s version of the same-named comedy from 1981.
