The 50-year-old Spice Girls member has joined Djimon Hounsou in the upcoming cinematic adaptation of the racing computer game Gran Turismo from Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, which is now filming in Hungary.

Halliwell Horner shared a screenshot of The Hollywood Reporter’s casting report on social media to validate the information. She captioned the picture, “Announcement.”

According to the outlet, the cast has expanded to include Daniel Puig (Naomi), Josha Stradowski (The Wheel of Time), and Thomas Kretschman (Indiana Jones 5), in addition to David Harbour (Stranger Things), Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings), Darren Barnet (Never Have I Ever), and Archie Madekwe (Midsommar).

The film, which is being directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9) and written by Jason Hall (American Sniper) and Zach Baylin (King Richard), is based on the true story of a teenage Gran Turismo gamer named Madekwe who, with the help of a retired driver named Harbour, went on to become a race-car driver, according to THR.

Hounsou, 58, and Halliwell Horner will portray Madekwe’s parents.

The casting announcement comes ahead of next month’s 25th anniversary of Halliwell and her fellow Spice Girls’ acting debut in the 1997 musical comedy Spice World, which also served as the title of their second studio album. With Spiceworld 25, a limited edition re-release of the album that debuted Friday, the pop icons are commemorating the event.

Since then, Halliwell Horner has shown her acting prowess in Sex and the City, Absolutely Fabulous, Crank: High Voltage, and in the 2014 Channel 4 series Geri: Life Sucks as a fictionalized version of herself.

On August 11, 2023, Gran Turismo is scheduled to make its theatrical debut.
