God of War, Ragnarök had a good showing at the Game Accolades 2022 and won the most overall awards from the yearly showcase, fans of Kratos and Atreus were thrilled to hear that Prime Video has ordered a live-action God of War series for a full season. It can be wonderful to see your favorite brands in a new light with any form of adaptation, whether it be in novels, video games, or any other medium, but there is also the worry that it may deviate too far from the original work.
Vernon Sanders, the head of television at Amazon Studios, recently spoke with Steven Weintraub about the upcoming show. Sanders reassured fans that it will remain faithful to the game. The discussion was a part of a more extensive interview regarding The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’s popularity on Prime Video, which had over 100 million viewers globally and more than 24 billion minutes streamed. Weintraub questioned Sanders about what aspects of the universe particularly appealed to Prime Studios and what he was most eager to show viewers throughout the interview. Sanders points out their history of making powerful adaptations and the fact that the strong emotional core truly speaks to them.
“We do incredibly well with adaptations, from Invincible to The Boys. I mean, we just covered so many of them, right? And so we know there’s such a passionate fan base for God of War. But the thing that we’re always looking for is whether there is a real emotional core if there’s a real narrative story, and I think [that’s] part of what makes God of War so special.”
Sanders also praised the creative behind the upcoming series, mentioning the emotional core of the father-son story and what viewers will see in the first season (a remarkable statement given that the series may have multiple seasons) and that it won’t stray from what made the original story so unique.
“At the center of it all is this story of fathers and sons, and families, set against this giant epic landscape. So what Rafe [Judkins] (showrunner) and Mark [Fergus] and Hawk [Ostby] (writers) have come up with for the first season, and for the series, I think, is both incredibly true to the source material, and also compelling on its own. If you never played the game, you will fall in love with the show and feel very much invited in. So we think it’s going to be huge.”
