Avatar: The Way of Water, directed by James Cameron, is aiming for the $600 million domestic box office milestone as it seeks to dominate the weekend chart for a record-breaking sixth time. This weekend, the science-fiction sequel is predicted to bring in between $17 million and $20 million, positioning it for the seventh-largest sixth weekend in history.

The Way of Water’s Friday revenue of $4.6 million brought its whole domestic revenue to $582.9 million. If forecasts come true, it will reach $598 million by Sunday. If it performs somewhat better than expected, it will surpass $600 million in just one weekend. The movie has earned more than $1.95 billion worldwide, and it will surpass $2 billion in the next few days, becoming the first movie to do so since Avengers: Endgame. It is currently the sixth-highest-grossing film of all time.

This is a fantastic outcome for the movie, which came out 13 years after the first Avatar set box office records en route to $700 million in the United States and $2.97 billion worldwide. The Way of Water has managed to meet the lofty expectations for success that director James Cameron had set before the film’s release, even though it isn’t projected to match the performance of the original Avatar, which is still the highest-grossing film in history at the global box office.

The Way of Water would need to gross somewhere about $2 billion to break even and be financially viable for further sequel investment, according to the director, given its hefty production costs and subsequent marketing expenditures. Currently, it appears that a new Avatar film will be released in December 2024.

Sony’s debut feature Missing, a stand-alone continuation of the popular computer-generated picture searching from 2018, debuted at number two. On its opening Friday, the movie earned $3.4 million from more than 3,000 cinemas, which includes the $760,000 it earned in Thursday previews. Missing is anticipated to earn roughly $8.5 million by the end of the weekend, which would be a respectable performance given its modest $7 million budget. With an estimated budget of less than $1 million, Searching became an unexpected success, earning $75 million globally.

With a $2.7 million fifth Friday, Universal’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish from Dreamworks hopes to take third place. The follow-up to 2011’s Puss in Boots, which was a prequel to the popular Shrek series and itself a spinoff, is aiming for a $12.4 million weekend, down just 14% from the previous weekend. The movie has now generated over $117 million domestically and is closing in on $300 million worldwide. The worldwide gross for the first Puss in Boots was $555 million.

With the science fiction thriller M3GAN, which is anticipated to earn $9.1 million in its third weekend, Universal also claimed the fourth position. This past Friday, the well-received movie brought in $2.6 million, bringing its overall domestic gross to almost $65 million against an alleged $12 million budget. Jason Blum, the creator of popular songs, and his Blumhouse label have won once again. A Man Called Otto, starring Tom Hanks, and released by Sony, continued to draw older audiences in its second weekend. It isn’t really a remake of A Man Called Ove, but rather another adaptation of the bestselling Swedish novel. This Friday, it brought in $2.6 million, giving it a second weekend total of $9 million.

The uplifting movie will surpass $35 million domestically by Sunday, giving Hanks his second straight triumph in the theatre after last year’s Elvis.
