Salma Hayek and Channing Tatum get along like two peas in a pod. In the eagerly awaited third entry in the Magic Mike trilogy, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, Tatum, 42, reprises his role as a stripper alongside Academy Award nominee Hayek, 56.

And both on and off the screen, the two were a good fit.

On the crowded red carpet prior to the film’s premiere at the Regal South Beach in Miami on Wednesday, Tatum, dressed in an all-black suit and coordinating T-shirt, discusses his relationship with Hayek. “I have felt in the picture, and Salma and I talk about everything,” he says.

“We are besties,” he adds.

The actor claims that his third installment in the Magic Mike franchise, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, a musical comedy shot in Miami and London on which he also served as producer, is distinct from his first two films in the series, Magic Mike (2012) and Magic Mike XXL (2015), which spawned the international stage production Magic Mike Live and the HBO Max competition series Finding Magic Mike.

The third film was made with the intention of starring the best dancers in the world and featuring a strong female protagonist who would be just as crucial to the narrative as Tatum’s character Mike Lane.

“Among other things, this movie is about what a woman wants,” says Tatum. “Salma and I have a dialogue with each other. We both ask, ‘Who do I want to be now?’ and ‘What do I do now?’ You’ll see in this film that Salma and I have beautiful moments.”

With Hayek as his seductive love interest Maxandra Mendoza, Tatum’s character, who was partially based on his own experiences as an 18-year-old bartender and stripper in Tampa, Florida, is back on film after an eight-year absence.

Tatum’s character, played by the actress, is at a crossroads in his life, and she persuades him to join her in London for a seductive theatrical production.

After spending a night getting to know Max, Mike, a down-on-his-luck bartender who shut down his furniture business, decides to go for the gold, which includes teaching a hot new group of gifted foreign dancers.

“We wanted this movie to be the Super Bowl of stripping,” he told the news previously.

Regarding seeing Tatum perform, Hayek exclaims that he “is an excellent dancer” while looking magnificent in a long, see-through black fishnet gown with vivid floral appliqués over black undergarments.

“I was surprised at how good he was, yet I expected it,” she adds. “He is very disciplined and took a lot of time to work rigorously on what he needed to do to perfect this role.”

Hayek’s character can identify with Mike’s problems readily because she has gone through a divorce and is mourning a loss. The two have an unexpected and fascinating connection that is characterized by mutual affection, camaraderie, and respect. They are like two lost souls who find each other.

“The steamy scenes were challenging, fun, and technical,” says Hayek. “It scared me at first, but Channing is great to work with. He is patient and has a great sense of humor.”

The chemistry between them is visible on camera, according to press statements made by the movie’s director Steven Soderbergh. When Mike and Max first meet, they are still wearing their clothing, but Channing and Salma make the scenario exceedingly seductive.

They really captured that well, he continued, “but it’s not exactly normal in American filmmaking to find that kind of sensuality and sexiness in a picture without being explicit.”
