At least in terms of box office receipts, Walt Disney prevails in 2022. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Disney had another successful year and placed first among studios at the domestic and international box office.

Disney completed the year with a combined total of $4.9 billion in worldwide box office revenue and $2 billion in domestic revenue from its 16 theatrical productions. This extends Disney’s impressive run of dominating the year-end global box office from 2016 until 2022.

Disney still controlled 40% of the top ten highest-grossing films in terms of domestic and global grosses despite Top Gun: Maverick topping both the domestic and global box office charts in 2022. This is because of its numerous franchise releases, such as Avatar: The Way of Water, which has made over $1.4 billion since its release last month, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($955 million worldwide/$411 million domestic), as well as its share of franchise releases.

Only three of Disney’s movies were released in China, which further enhances this achievement. These were Encanto, Death on the Nile, and The Way of Water (which was released in November 2021 stateside).

Disney is not particularly surprised by any of this because The Way of Water, James Cameron’s eagerly anticipated Avatar sequel, was always going to be a major draw at the box office. The Way of Water amassed nearly $400 million in domestic box office revenue in just two and a half weeks. Due to a lack of competition at the box office, that total revenue only kept growing after the holidays.

In 2023, will Disney be able to maintain its dominance of the box office? The studio definitely has a chance, and their twelve planned theatrical releases at the time of this writing will help. Some of them include franchise movies like The Marvels in July, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in February, and the fifth Indiana Jones film at the end of June. Additionally, the studio will release original works like Wish, another animated movie, and the most recent Pixar movie, Elemental, in June and November, respectively.
