Robert Downey transforms into a balding redhead that makes him unrecognizable

Robert Downey Jr. seems to be giving The Sympathizer, his newest HBO series, his all. The 57-year-old actor was completely unrecognizable in the photograph taken on the Los Angeles set of the program. He had bleached eyebrows and receding wavy red hair, and was dressed like an old man in a burgundy jacket and pink shirt with a white T-shirt poking through. He was also wearing brown shoes and navy jeans.

A half-French, half-Vietnamese guy (Hoa Xuande) who spied for Communist forces during the Vietnam War is the subject of the historical drama-thriller. The series, which is based on the same-titled 2015 book by author Viet Thanh Nguyen, also features Sandra Oh.

The Hollywood Reporter claims that Downey Jr. will play several supporting roles.

For the father of three, who has three children—Exton, 10, and Avri, 8, with wife Susan Downey, and son Indio, 29, with ex-wife Deborah Falconer—getting into character was a family effort.

Downey Jr. had his two younger children shave his head in order to give them a unique role in helping him get ready for the role in October. Even the function of social media was documented.

“Sorry to interrupt but I need your help,” the star begins the video, entering a room where his kids are carving pumpkins. “You know how I’m starting this project soon?”

“Yeah, The Sympathizer?” says Avri as Exton adds, “Yeah, you’re playing like five roles or something.”

“Right. Anyway, will you guys shave my head since I don’t want to wear a bald cap? “His kids stare up in astonishment as he asks them.

Is that even acceptable? Before she and her brother begin cutting their dad’s hair, Avri smirks.

Downey Jr. Shows off his new appearance and declares after shaving his head completely, “Well done, fellas. What do I owe you before I let you resume carving your pumpkin?”

The two children then converse in whispers to choose their preferred method of payment.

“Keep your money, Avri’s got a better idea,” says Exton as Avri tells her dad, “I need help with a Halloween project.”

Then, using the back of her father’s head as a canvas, Avri turns his bald head into a pumpkin. To finish the look, she added a pumpkin stem to her dad’s head and carved a happy face into the pumpkin.

The Iron Man star captioned the picture, “The things we do for our work… and our kids. #Sympathizer set ready.”
