Ashton Kutcher claims he feels awkward with Reese Witherspoon on the red carpet

Ashton Kutcher explains why he and his Your Place or Mine co-star Reese Witherspoon were a little uneasy on the red carpet. Kutcher stood next to a beaming Witherspoon at the Los Angeles premiere of their Netflix movie last week, maintaining a solemn attitude and keeping his hands in his pockets. The 45-year-old actress later said that this was on purpose.

“Here’s the thing: If I put my arm around her, and was like all friendly with her, I’d be having an affair with her,” Kutcher explained during a guest spot on the Chicks in the Office podcast. “Like, the rumor would be that I’m having an affair with her.”

Even Witherspoon, 46, claimed to have received a message mocking them on their lack of chemistry from Kutcher’s wife, Mila Kunis.

The star of The Morning Show claimed during a Friday interview on Today that she received an email from Kunis, 39, whom she refers to as a friend. The day following the debut, she revealed, “She even emailed us last night. She remarks, “You two seem so uncomfortable walking the red carpet together.”

Witherspoon said, in response to a question about working with Kutcher, “It’s just fun because when you know a girlfriend so well, it was just fun to get to know her significant other since I’ve loved her for so long.”

On Chicks in the Office, Kutcher spoke of looking forward to working with Witherspoon “I was frightened by her, not just scared of her. Man, I can’t believe Reese Witherspoon is sending me video messages, I thought to myself.”

The Iowa-born actor revealed that Witherspoon is the one who brought him back into the world of rom-coms “after a decade” while sporting a “Dad” baseball cap (he and Kunis share two children: daughter Wyatt, 8, and son Dimitri, 6).

“She’s such a badass,” the Punk’d alum said. “She has such a presence … she has so much range, she can do drama, she can do comedy, she can do everything. She’s such a movie star.”

The major actors in the romantic comedy are Witherspoon and Kutcher as Debbie and Peter, who are “best friends and extreme opposites” but learn an important lesson from a quick change of scenery.

“She craves routine with her son in L.A.; he thrives on change in N.Y.,” reads an official logline. “When they swap houses and lives for a week, they discover what they think they want might not be what they really need.”

In a December 2022 interview with CNN, Kutcher claimed choosing to participate in Your Place or Mine was a “easy” choice because he “finally had the opportunity” to work with Witherspoon and McKenna, 55, “two women I have wanted to work with for years.”

McKenna, Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan, Lauren Neustadter, and Witherspoon all contributed to co-producing the movie. Kutcher compared working with Witherspoon to “hanging out with a best friend.”

“We just had fun!” he raved of their time on set. “I can talk to Reese about anything — acting, business, kids, media, football. She’s always game.”

When Witherspoon heard about Kutcher, she couldn’t have agreed more “He cracks me up, I think. Our senses of humor and timing are remarkably similar.”
