Hell of a Summer, the feature directorial debut of Stranger Things actors Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk, who also co-wrote and will also star in the movie, has unveiled its first image.

The Wolfhard and Bryk characters are shown in the exclusive shot from Variety looking into the beams of their flashlights in what seems to be a pitch-black forest. The two appear to be scared because they are both displaying anxious facial expressions. What the two are looking at is unknown. The two won’t be travelling alone, though, as Hell of a summer also stars Abby Quinn, D’Pharoah Woon-A-Tai, Paradis Saremi, and Fred Hechinger. The latter actor is most known for playing the indifferent Quinn Mossbacher in the HBO show The White Lotus’ first season.

There have been very few plot details released about the film. However, Wolfhard has provided a small tidbit of what to expect. During a recent interview with Collider, Wolfhard said that the film would be a horror-comedy-slasher type feature set at a camp. From his words, Wolfhard made the project sound somewhat indiciative of the iconic summer camp-horror films that defined the 1980s, such as the Friday the 13th series:

“It’s a comedy slasher film that’s set at a summer camp. It takes place at counselors’ weekend before the campers get there. All the counselors are getting the camp ready and people start getting murdered. It’s this kind of ensemble camp comedy with blood in it. I co-wrote and co-directed it with Billy Bryk. We’re in the middle of editing it now. Hopefully, someone wants to put it out. That’d be awesome”

Wolfhard’s goal to find a home for the movie has also been fulfilled, as Altitude Film Sales has been chosen to distribute Hell of a Summer internationally, according to a separate report from Variety. According to reports, the movie will be included in Altitude’s lineup at the next European Film Market in Berlin. Altitude has signed on to release Marc Webb’s upcoming horror Day Drinker as well as a remake of the 1994 picture The Crow with Bill Skarsgrd attached to feature, despite not having the same name recognition as other distributors.

Although this will be Wolfhard and Bryk’s first time directing a movie, they are no strangers to the spotlight. The movie was officially revealed in July 2022. Wolfhard first gained notoriety as Mike Wheeler in the Netflix series Stranger Things. He is also well-known for his roles in the remade It horror movies. Bryk made an appearance in the 2021 film Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which also starred Wolfhard. Together with Jason Bateman, Michael Costigan, and Jan Van Hoy for Parts & Labor Films, Wolfhard, Bryk, and Hechinger produced the movie in addition to acting, directing, and writing it. The film investment company 30West, which is also executive producing, provided funding for the production.
