Louis Tomlinson is being open about the breakup of One Direction. The vocalist, 31, revealed in a new interview with The Times on Thursday that he was “mortified” by the band’s dissolution in 2015.

He remarked, “I was ashamed and gutted when One Direction broke up. “I guess I was a little resentful since it seemed like another loss to me. Yet now that I know more about the situation, there is less fury. What is, is what is.”

The group, which consists of Liam Payne, Tomlinson, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan, announced their break in August 2015. Johannah Deakin, the mother of Tomlinson, passed away from leukaemia the next year at the age of 42. Two years later, his 18-year-old sister Félicité passed away after an unintentional cocaine, painkiller, and anxiety medication overdose.

The British star, who formed a group with the lads during the 2010 season of The X Factor U.K., says he would still “be up” for a reunion with them despite his views towards the band’s breakup.

He continued to The Times, “Getting back together at some time is impossible to envisage right now. “But I’d be shocked if we went through life without experiencing some sort of reunion, or whatever you want to call it. I’m willing to do it.”

Said he, “While I do miss the lads and being one of the five, I really enjoy being independent. Time had come.”

Tomlinson has released two solo albums after departing from One Direction: Walls in 2020 and Faith in the Future in 2022, the latter of which peaked at No. 1 in the U.K. and No. 5 in the U.S.

Yet, it hasn’t prevented him from envying Styles’ success. The 29-year-old is now on a sold-out worldwide tour and has just won four BRIT Awards and two Grammy Awards.

It’s hardly exactly shocking, is it? Tomlinson remarked on Styles’ fame. Harry has always fit that description, and it’s been fascinating to watch. Envy? At first, perhaps, when I was still trying to find my footing, but comparing your own accomplishments to those of others is never a good idea, is it?

“These days, I’m learning how to lift myself when necessary. Before, I had no idea how to achieve that, but now? Today I am confident that I can.

Upon accepting the British artist of the year award at the BRITs earlier this month, Styles congratulated his One Direction teammates.

“I want to thank my mother for enrolling me in the X Factor without telling me; without you, I genuinely wouldn’t be here. Niall, Louis, Liam, and Zayn deserve my gratitude because without you, I also wouldn’t be here. I greatly appreciate that “According to Styles’ speech.
