While modern horror fans are currently experiencing a revival, more and more horror movies from the late 1990s and early 2000s are emerging as cult favorites. This also applies to Jan de Bont’s 1999 adaptation of The Haunting. Now, courtesy to Scream Factory, the movie adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s classic book The Haunting of Hill House, published in 1959, will be available on 4K Blu-ray on May 30.

Similar to the book, the movie centres on four strangers who wind up stranded in the eerie Hill House estate following a disastrous scientific experiment. The cast of this remake is noteworthy. A-list actors including Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Owen Wilson, Lili Taylor, and Virginia Madsen are all present in The Haunting. Despite the fact that Neeson had just finished films like Star Wars: The Phantom Menace and Schindler’s List, for which he was nominated for an Oscar, this cast was still somewhat unheard of at the time. It’s one of the many reasons to watch the movie again because critics hated it when it came out in 1999. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a meagre 17% rating. All of this is true despite the remake’s respectable box office performance.

History of “The Haunting of Hill House”

The Haunting remake is overshadowed historically by two significant events. The first one is the original 1963 picture, which many horror fans deem to be among the best haunted house movies ever made.

The original, a classic 1960s black and white gothic horror movie, had more in common with campy 1950s favourites like William Castle’s The House on Haunted Hill than a contemporary sombre genre romp like James Wan’s The Conjuring, while having a similar fundamental narrative to both the remake and the novel. The remake is trapped between these two contrasting periods of horror. It was released at a challenging time when slashers were seeing a comeback and haunted house movies wouldn’t become popular again for another ten years.

The Haunting of Hill House, a shoddy 2018 Netflix remake directed by Mike Flanagan, is the main reason this movie has fallen into obscurity over the years. Hill House should sound quite familiar to casual fans because of this. While it deviates significantly from the book’s themes and characters and doesn’t adhere to the book as strictly as the films do, it perfectly captures the gothic frights of Jackson’s book. It’s a genre classic and one of the greatest TV shows ever produced. As a result of its success, Jackson’s previous works were examined in the fantastic The Haunting of Bly Mansion.

Fans of that program should still watch the 1999 movie despite Flanagan’s creative changes to the horror genre over the past ten years. It doesn’t come close to matching the series’ high points, but it’s incredibly underappreciated and may be the greatest movie to depict Jackson’s horrifying tale. Even without the atmosphere, the characters makes it worth seeing, and any fan of horror will enjoy the vibe that is present throughout.
