Tom Cruise said that the Top Gun: Maverick reunion he had with Val Kilmer was emotional. Last Friday, when Cruise, 60, visited Jimmy Kimmel Live, the host asked Cruise about his feelings about getting to work with Kilmer, 63, once more.

That was extremely emotional, I just want to express that,” remarked Cruise. “Val is such a tremendous actor that he quickly became that role again,” said a person I’ve known for a long time. “For him to come back and portray that character.”

He said, “You’re simply staring at Iceman,” referring to Kilmer’s appearance in Top Gun: Maverick as Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, who is consulted by Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Cruise) for guidance on how to execute the movie’s top-secret, high-risk operation.

“I couldn’t stop crying. I started to cry, “Kimmel questioned Cruise about whether he sobbed while filming the scene, and Cruise reportedly did. “I adore his work; he’s such a fantastic actor.”

In July of last year, Kilmer assisted Cruise in celebrating his 60th birthday by tweeting a heartfelt birthday wish to his co-star.

Kilmer, 63, responded “Happy Birthday Mav @TomCruise from Ice!” in reference to the call signs of their well-known characters.

In May of last year, Cruise told the media that it was “wonderful” to work with Kilmer again on the sequel.

“At the time, he added, “I’ve always appreciated his work and talent. When we get together, we just start laughing. Having him back was a momentous occasion. It greatly affected me.”

Becoming Iceman once more for Kilmer was “like being reunited with a long-lost buddy,” he said. He told the reporters that even after more than 30 years, “The personalities essentially never go. They continue to exist in extreme cold. Please excuse the pun.”

Since its premiere in May of last year, Top Gun: Maverick has been a box office hit, earning close to $1.5 billion worldwide. Steven Spielberg is heard telling Tom Cruise in a video from the Oscar nominee’s luncheon on February 15 that the movie “saved Hollywood’s ass.”

The long-awaited sequel to the 1986 smash blockbuster, the filmmaker continued, “Could have rescued theatrical distribution” in its whole.

In the clip, which was first shared on Instagram by documentarian Kartiki Gonsalves, Spielberg tells Cruise, “Really, Top Gun: Maverick might have rescued the entire theatrical industry.”
