What started as a tale about contemporary dinosaurs when Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park appeared in theatres in 1993 finally evolved into a wildly successful series, amassing a sizable following of various generations for almost three decades. The popular series recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, and to mark the occasion, LEGO has released five new sets based on memorable sequences from the series. One of these sets even includes a buildable mound of dinosaur feces (yep, you read that correctly: a small dino dung).

A 137-piece set called “Jurassic Park Velociraptor Escape (76957),” which costs $39.99 is one of the five new sets in the collection. In addition to a Velociraptor figurine, it also includes miniatures of Dr. Ellie Sattler and Robert Muldoon, who were respectively portrayed in the film by Laura Dern and Bob Peck. A “Jurassic Park Dilophosaurus Ambush (76958),” a 211-piece set retailing for $19.99, is also included in the latest release. It features a buildable Jeep, a jungle build, and—of course—a Dilophosaurus figure, complete with Wayne Knight’s miniature Dennis Nedry sitting in the driver’s seat.

The “Jurassic Park Triceratops Research (76959)” $49.99 set comes with an off-roader vehicle, a buildable Ford Explorer, and a Triceratops, along with a shovel item to help scoop the toxic berry hiding inside the dinosaur’s – well – buildable feces. Jeff Goldblum’s Dr. Ian Malcolm and Dern’s Ellie have long been fan favorites in the franchise.

The remaining pieces of the collection include a $79.99, 512-piece “Jurassic Park Brachiosaurus Discovery (76960)” set including tiny figures of Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), John Hammond (Richard Attenborough), and Dr. Ellie Sattler as they approach a Brachiosaurus in a Jeep Wrangler. The 693-piece “Jurassic Park Visitor Center: T. rex & Raptor Attack (76961)” also has Mini Ellie, Dr. Henry Wu (BD Wong), Lex Murphy (Ariana Richards), and Dr. Alan Grant as LEGO figures. The price of this bundle is $129.99. A Tyrannosaurus Rex and a Velociraptor poised to wreak havoc inside a dinosaur egg incubator are also included in the collection.

The Basis of a Successful Franchise Is “Jurassic Park”

Even over 30 years after its first release, Jurassic Park has remained a classic and served as the catalyst for a sizable franchise. The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997 and Jurassic Park III in 2000 were the films’ direct sequels. Although the two sequels weren’t as popular or as well-received by critics as the first, the franchise was still able to grow in 2015 with the release of Jurassic World, which starred Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard in key roles.

Several sequels to the most recent entry in the series have also been produced, including Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Jurassic World Dominion (2022). Even though Jurassic World features new actors, it nonetheless pays tribute to the first movie and has recast Neill, Dern, and Goldblum in the sequel, Dominion.

Outside the movies, the Jurassic Park universe has spawned theme parks, merchandising, and collectibles, increasing the popularity of the series. On June 1, 2023, the new LEGO Jurassic Park collection will debut on LEGO.com and in LEGO retail locations, bringing the dinosaurs’ roars back. Preorders can also be made on the LEGO website.
