Pink Pakistan Trust and Higher Education Commission (HEC) Pakistan have entered into a collaboration to create awareness about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer among college and university students across the country.

Dr. Zubaida Qazi, President Pink Pakistan, and Mr. Muhammad Faisal Butt, Director General, National Academy of Higher Education (NAHE) HEC signed the Letter of Intent (LoI) on 21st February 2023 at HEC Secretariat Islamabad.

The Signing Ceremony was presided over by the Chairman HEC, Professor Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, and attended by the Executive Director HEC, Dr. Shaista Sohail.

Pakistan has the highest breast cancer incidence rate in the Asian region with one in nine women at risk of the fatal disease. It is the most common type of cancer among women in Pakistan with around 40,000 breast cancer cases reported annually.

Early detection and timely treatment are the key to reducing the deaths caused by breast cancer. Pink Pakistan and HEC have joined to promote awareness about breast cancer symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment among college and university students.

Under the collaboration, Pink Pakistan and HEC will launch several key initiatives to create awareness about breast cancer. Conferences, seminars and workshops will be organized in colleges and universities to educate students about breast cancer.

 

A social media campaign for creating breast cancer awareness will be designed and launched to use technology to maximize its reach among the youth.

HEC will direct the universities to encourage and prioritize research around breast cancer. Pink Pakistan and HEC will facilitate, support and fund research projects that aim to conduct original and robust research on breast cancer in medical universities.

‘We are excited to be partnering with Higher Education Commission Pakistan to create awareness about breast cancer among the youth of the country. We need to break the taboo around breast cancer in the society, if we want to save thousands of precious lives lost every year to the fatal disease.

Educating the youth about breast cancer is the key, and we are glad that HEC has provided us the opportunity to educate college and university students across the country about breast cancer,” said Dr. Zubaida Qazi, President Pink Pakistan.
