At least a person has died and eight-person were injured due to an explosion in a chemical plant in Spain’s autonomous Catalonia region.
One person is missing after the incident, according to the sources.
The blast took place at Químicas Del Óxido de Etileno plant at 18:40 local time in La Canonja municipality.
Officials report that the incident had occurred due to a chemical accident.
Several firefighters had reached the spot and have handled the situation late into the night.
The nearby building was collapsed and the dead person was found there.
According to Catalonia’s civil protection service, two of the injured people are in serious condition as they had serious burns.
Catalan leaders informed the media, “Now we can send a message of calm and confidence to people. There is no toxicity and therefore people can carry on with their lives as normal.”
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has provided assistance and support for the concerned officials handling the incident.
Local people living near the plant have made a video of the results of the explosion. They have posted on social media platform Twitter. The video showed flames and smoke coming out of the plant after the blast.
