TOKYO: An explosion occurred at a restaurant in the Japanese city of Koriyama has killed at least one person and injured 17 others.

According to the details, a gas leak and explosion occurred in a restaurant near the northern city of Koriyama has killed at least one person and injured dozens more, officials say.

According to rescue officials, the blast also damaged several houses near the restaurant. Rescue officials said the injured have been shifted to a hospital where they are being treated.

Fire brigade officials said six propane gas balloons were placed in the restaurant and the accident was caused by a gas leak in them.

Police say the restaurant has been closed since April this year due to the coronavirus and reopened last week.

In Japan, for the first time on Wednesday, the number of confirmed daily infection cases exceeded 1,000, reaching 1,131.

According to the official figures, 250 new cases of coronavirus were confirmed in the capital on Wednesday, while 221 new cases were recorded in Osaka prefecture.
