Coronavirus: India overtakes Brazil in cases

India has overtaken Brazil as it becomes the country having the second-highest number of coronavirus cases in the world.

The country has reported 4,204,613 confirmed coronavirus cases whereas 71,687 deaths, the third-highest in the world. However, a total of 3,250,429 Covid-19 patients have recovered. The number of active cases in India is 882,497.

More than 90,000 new cases were reported in India in the past 24 hours.

The increase in cases is seen as the government continues to lift restrictions to try to overcome the economic crisis due to which millions of jobs were lost when the virus hit in March.

Sources said that over 60% of active cases have been reported from states of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state.

In addition to this, more than 2,700 cases were recorded in the capital New Delhi, the highest in the city in more than two months.

Furthermore, an increase in Covid-19 infections in various rural areas also caused an increase in numbers.

Moreover, more than 1,000 deaths were reported in India in the last seven days.

Authorities in the country are lifting restrictions to boost the economy, as the economy decreased by 23.9% in the three months to the end of June, the worst slump since the country started releasing quarterly data in 1996.
