RUSSIAN oligarch Roman Abramovich is said to be suffering from poisoning symptoms.

The Chelsea owner, along with Ukrainian peace negotiators, fell ill in an attack blamed on hardliners in Moscow, who they say want to sabotage their peace talks.

According to the Wall Street Journal, symptoms included red eyes, constant and painful tearing, and peeling skin on their faces and hands.

The billionaire and at least two of his Ukrainian counterparts became ill shortly after a meeting in Kyiv earlier this month.

Despite having the same food and drink as them, a fourth member of the team did not become ill.

Abramovich left the UK earlier this month after the British government sanctioned him for his ties to Vladimir Putin.

Since then, the 54-year-old has been involved in covert peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.

These talks are thought to be a way for him to repair his image following the harsh sanctions imposed by the UK and the EU.

Since the beginning of the war, he has been flying back and forth between Moscow and Lviv in western Ukraine.

It’s unclear whether the suspected attack was caused by a biological or chemical agent, or if it was caused by an electromagnetic-radiation attack.

According to the investigative website Bellingcat, the dosage and type of toxin used against the trio were “likely insufficient” to cause life-threatening damage.

Instead, the attack was intended to “frighten” the victims.

According to the report, the poison used was most likely a variant of porphyrin, a protein required in red blood cells to carry oxygen but dangerous in high concentrations.

President Zelensky, who met with Abramovich in recent weeks, was said to be unconcerned.

Just a few days ago, the Russian handed Putin a handwritten note from Zelensky.

According to a source close to Abramovich, it’s unclear who targeted the group, but it could have been hardliners in Moscow looking to sabotage peace talks between Russia and Ukraine.

According to Bellingcat, three members of the joint delegation, including Abramovich, attended peace talks in Kiev on March 3.

They immediately experienced “symptoms consistent with chemical weapon poisoning.”

Abramovich, along with another Russian businessman, and Ukrainian MP Rustem Umerov, took part in the talks, which lasted until about 10 p.m.

In the hours preceding their symptoms, the trio had consumed only chocolate and water.

On March 4, Abramovich, Umerov, and the negotiator drove from Kyiv to Lviv on their way to Poland, then to Istanbul for further talks.

According to sources, the conditions of the Oligarch and his Ukrainian negotiators, including Crimean Tartar lawmaker Rustem Umerov, have since improved and their lives are no longer in danger.

It came as the UK sanctioned Roman Abramovich as part of a crackdown on Russian money as the world seeks to strangle Putin’s regime.

After weeks of speculation that he could face sanctions, Abramovich, who has a net worth of around £10 billion, has been barred from selling Chelsea and has had all of his UK assets frozen.

According to documents released by the British government, the Chelsea manager has a “close relationship” with Putin.

In addition, UK officials accused him of “destabilising” Ukraine through his stake in steel and mining company Evraz PLC.

According to documents, the company may have supplied steel to the Russian military for use in the production of tanks.

Abramovich’s spokesman previously denied that Evraz steel was used for Russian military purposes, claiming that it was intended for “rail and construction.”

Russian tanks emblazoned with the white ‘Z’ symbol have played a significant role in Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

According to the government document, Evraz has been “undermining or threatening” Ukraine, including “potentially supplying steel to the Russian military that may have been used in the production of tanks.”

The document refers to Abramovich as a “pro-Kremlin oligarch” and accuses him of receiving a “financial benefit or other material benefit” from his relationship with Putin.

Companies associated with him are said to have received tax breaks, benefits on share sales, and contracts in the run-up to the FIFA 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Abramovich took direct control of the steel group just a few weeks ago, just days before Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Abramovich previously sold a £151 million stake in Evraz in 2019 in an effort to reduce the risk of sanctions, according to the company.

As Abramovich attempted to offload Chelsea by putting it up for sale, pressure mounted on the government to sanction him.

Abramovich, who has Russian, Israeli, and Portuguese citizenship, has now seen his club thrown into disarray.

Western officials have been pursuing Russia’s money and those with close ties to Putin, such as Abramovich.

Going after the mafia-style regime’s coffers is hoped to help put an end to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
