A ‘DOOMSDAY’ plane designed to withstand nuclear blasts has been spotted flying over Europe as tensions rise over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The “Flying Pentagon,” a Cold War-era Boeing 747, was seen flying over the English Channel after taking off from Washington.
The Nightwatch aircraft was then seen circling over an area north of Cambridge, seemingly on its way to RAF Mildenhall.
The plane’s design is intended to withstand an electromagnetic pulse while keeping all systems operational.
Triple-decker Doomsday planes even use analogue flight instruments, which are less vulnerable to cyber attacks.
During a military crisis, its sole purpose is to assist military analysts and strategists.
While the planes are not technically classified, they are rarely mentioned; in fact, the Air Force does not even publicly acknowledge owning some of them.
The planes, which have been in use since the 1970s, were long thought to be the best chance for a Cold War president to survive a nuclear attack.
They also include special equipment such as a five-mile-long trailing wire antenna that would allow the president to communicate with the nuclear submarine fleet even if ground-based communications were destroyed.
It comes as fears of a nuclear war have grown after Russian President Vladimir Putin placed his nuclear forces on high alert.
The Russian Defense Ministry released photos of a massive 46.5-ton weapon firing shells at Kharkiv.
Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia’s deputy UN ambassador, has previously warned that Putin will use nuclear weapons if Nato “provokes” him.
“Why not, if NATO provokes Russia, if NATO attacks Russia? We are a nuclear power, after all “He stated.
Last week, Russia released video of its “Kinzhal” rocket destroying an ammunition depot in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine’s westernmost city.
Russia had previously released chilling footage of its 7,000mph Zircon hypersonic nuke missile, branding it “unstoppable.”
The Russian dictator had previously warned that Moscow had “unparalleled” stockpiles of hypersonic missiles.
