A paramedic has died as a result of injuries sustained during a training mishap in north Wales.

Mark Pell, 51, a member of the London Ambulance Service’s motorbike response team, was injured Thursday in a five-vehicle incident in Conwy county.

He was taken to a hospital in Stoke-on-Trent but died five days later from his injuries.

Mr. Pell, who had served the NHS for 28 years, “exemplified everything that is great” about the service, according to chief executive Daniel Elkeles.

Mr. Pell was one of two paramedics undergoing training with the North Wales Police driving training unit at the time of the collision on the A5 near Pentrefoelas.

Another motorcycle who was evacuated to the hospital was subsequently discharged, while two other passengers in an HGV were treated for minor injuries at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor.

Mr. Elkeles stated in a statement that Mr. Pell joined the London Ambulance Service in 1994 and spent most of his career in the Essex towns of Whipps Cross and Buckhurst Hill.

He acted as a mentor at Ilford’s operational placement center throughout the epidemic.

“Mark joined us as a qualified ambulance person, a title I am told he was extremely proud of,” said Mr. Elkeles.

“Mark was often referred to by his colleagues as the ‘mother hen’. This was due to his desire to ensure everyone and everything was looked after.

“I hear it was not uncommon to see Mark three hours after his shift had ended, tidying up, restocking, and generally ensuring the station had what it needed to run efficiently.

“Mark will be remembered for the absolute care and support that he offered to his colleagues, which was only surpassed by the care and compassion he gave to his patients.

“London and Londoners owe him a massive debt of gratitude for his 28 years of dedicated service. He will be greatly missed.”
